Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone and Woodbridge Township Police Director Joseph Nisky announced Tuesday, March 18.

The incident began when a Woodbridge student reported receiving threatening text messages from another student on Monday evening, March 17, authorities said. The student went to school administration the following morning, which prompted an investigation.

During the investigation, school officials searched the suspect’s belongings and found a loaded firearm, police said. The school then notified Woodbridge Township Police at approximately 8:07 a.m.

Officers responded to the school, seized the weapon, and took the 17-year-old male into custody, officials said.

The juvenile has been charged with acts of delinquency for offenses that, if committed by an adult, would constitute unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose, terroristic threats, possession of a firearm on school property, and possession of a ghost gun, authorities said.

The teen is currently being held at the Middlesex County Juvenile Detention Center, awaiting a preliminary hearing before a Family Court Judge.

The investigation remains active and ongoing, officials said. Anyone with information is urged to contact Detective Brian Vella of the Woodbridge Police Department at 732-602-7317.
